Hamty is an extraordinary being whose journey from a track athlete and volleyball player to a dive instructor and marine conservationist has transformed her life and reshaped the understanding of our underwater world.
Hamty was passionate about athletics from an early age. She excelled as a track athlete and later became a gym instructor where she went through various training programs and specialized in bodybuilding and rehabilitation. She discovered that her passion for fitness not only transformed her clients physically but also mentally. Additionally, Hamty contributed her skills to the National Volleyball team.
However, her life took an extraordinary turn when her first dive during the pandemic ignited a newfound purpose. This experience led her to return to her home island and become a dive instructor on Fuahmulak. She furthered her journey by joining "Girls that Scuba," an international scuba diving community. Collaborating with the Empower Oceans program, Hamty launched Fisari Kambalun last year, an initiative that provided diving and conservation courses exclusively for women.
Driven by her deep-seated passion for marine conservation, Hamty co-founded MIYARU, a local NGO dedicated to studying and protecting the predatory shark population of the Maldives. MIYARU has undertaken groundbreaking research projects including collaborations with National Geographic and facilitating efforts with local dive centres to study pregnancies in tiger sharks, all while advocating for the critical role sharks play in marine ecosystems.
Hamty's commitment to reshaping people's perceptions of nature, especially regarding the vital role sharks play in marine ecosystems, has earned her recognition in prestigious publications such as The Guardian and the WWF. Her achievements, including a documentary based on her "Tiger Eyes," inspire countless individuals worldwide. As she embarks on an upcoming internship in South Africa, Hamty's ultimate goal remains focused on elevating global conversations surrounding marine conservation.
